The Yaesu FT-847 is still a fairly new ham radio model (production was just stopped on these a few years back) and this one packs more features in one model than a Swiss army knife!  This do it all rig not only works on all the HF bands, it covers VHF, UHF bands, and supports satellite operation too!  It have a very attractive blue backlit display that makes monitoring signals both pleasant and easy to read.  It also has solid DSP, is truly all mode (including digital modes), and even has dual watch receive!  It does more than most new amateur radios you'll find on the market today!

The Yaesu FT-847 is also a serious competitor to the Kenwood TS-1000 in having a wide frequency converage, raw features and in having the latest digital and data technologies.  Don't get  me wrong, both transceivers have their strengths, however in my opinion this model is better built, looks better, and has a better receiver (basically it wins in the important elements).  The receiver sounds very clean and distortion free, the it isn't excessively menu driven.  It's most often used controls are done with real knobs that are easy to find with a nice layout.  It you ever wanted a single transceiver that does it all in one, this is one for you!
